Shennong is my third submission to the history of natural medicine. Legendary ruler and Chinese hero Shennong lived over 5,00 years ago. He has not only been recognized for teaching the Chinese agriculture but also the use of herbal medicines. While credited with the use and discovery of many different herbs, he is most notably attributed to the use and promotion of tea leaves as a cure for a wide variety of ailments and poisons. In his quest for herbal knowledge he is rumored to have consumed samples of all the herbs he collected so he could experience and understand the plant on all levels. Many traditional chinese herbalist are still taught and practice this way.

I have recently started a series of paintings cataloging the history of natural healing. I am trying to touch upon all of the doctors who pioneered naturopathic techniques, natural living, and medical philosophy. Starting us off is the father of medicine himself, Hippocrates. The 2011 Naturopathic Gathering is being hosted by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto on November 4th-6th.
What is the Gathering?

DC Federal Legislative: Support Naturopathic Medicine!!!
On Monday May 2, 165 naturopathic doctors and students will swarm Capitol Hill and meet with almost 200 Members of Congress. Carrying the message that naturopathic medicine can play a significant role in “Curing the Crisis Called Health Care.”
- NDs are graduates from accredited institutions equivalent to those in conventional med school.
- NDs must successfully pass board exams administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners as well.
- The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME) accreditation standards are recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
- Naturopathic Medical programs consist of at least 4 years, 4,100 hours of study and 1,200 direct patient contact clock hours.
- An ND degree is classified on par with MD and DO as a First-Professional Degree under Doctorate-Professional (Clinical).
