Embrace your weeds!

by harmoniousvibrations

WEEDS can save the world. So many of our every day, villainized weeds are actually highly useful- both medicinally and nutritionally. They are growing for a reason. Their pesky presence in your lawn or garden is working to purify the planet and restore the earth- through the soil, the air and it’s people.  Check out the links below for some more information on our most nutritious and medicinal weeds from the one and only Susan Weed

The Agave Deception

by chupamiel

For many of us health conscious individuals, the search for a good alternative sweetener to sugar has led to many unfortunate dead ends. The most recent craze is undoubtedly centered on Agave. Alas, this is yet another instance of top of the line advertisement leading the public astray.

Here is the truth: Agave Syrup has up to 97% fructose–even higher than high fructose corn syrup–the evilest of all creations.  Although fructose does not raise blood sugar levels, it does increase insulin resistance, which lends towards obesity and is the first stage in the development of Type II Diabetes. Unlike glucose, fructose is %100 metabolized in the liver, meaning it is immediately broken down and converted into harmful fats. Furthermore, it enters into glycolysis at a stage that is unregulated, thus inhibiting the normal control of our metabolism and appetite.  If we look at the increase in obesity rates in the United States, there is a strong correlation between the advent of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Not good.

Oooh and even more exciting is the list of chemicals used to refine it. Look at these gems: Activated charcoal, resins, sulfuric and/or hydrofluoric acid, dicalite, clarimex, inulin enzymes and fructozyme. I was particularly impressed with the hydrofluoric acid, which on a recent episode of Breaking Bad, was used to dissolve a dead body, and in the process dissolved metal, tile and wood. Yum. There are those companies that do make sure to use raw, organic agave, free of pesticides, and less toxic refining process. However, even those companies committed to producing a good product; which is a minority, end up with a produce that is 50% fructose.

An Apple a Day: Keeps the Doctor Away?

by syntrophic

Honey Crisp Apples

So you just went to an apple orchard.  You picked a basket full of ripe autumn apples, each one selected for its own unique quality.

“Ooh, get some small ones, some bright red ones, some sour, sweet and round ones!”

Back home you feel amazing, staring down at your sorted bounty.  And you will probably feel great that whole week too; an apple a day keeps the doctor away, right?

But maybe this old saying, itself representing an entire paradigm of medicine really–is wrong.  If you eat an apple, or many apples in this case, and you feel great, maybe that is when you should go to the doctor.  Because whether you choose to visit a ND or MD, any nuanced health professional worth seeing will recognize the power of preventative medicine, and that’s what we are getting to here.
