The arrival of spring brings beauty, music and light. In spritual traditions across this earth, this transition marks the new year–the chance to purify oneself of the heaviness that may have attached to our mind body and soul over the past year. As beings on this Earth, we have the ability and right to be just as colorful and beautiful as the fields of smiling wildflowers; and we can sing as loudly and as joyously as our feathered friends perched above. Be the beauty you see and feel around you. Happy spring!
Here is a poem by the gifted Rumi in honor of this time of year:
The Music We Are
Did you hear that winter’s over? The basil
and the carnations cannot control their
laughter. The nightingale, back from his
wandering, has been made singing master
over the birds. The trees reach out their
congratulations. The soul goes dancing
through the king’s doorway. Anemones blush
because they have seen the rose naked.
Spring, the only fair judge, walks in the
courtroom, and several December thieves steal
away, Last year’s miracles will soon be
forgotten. New creatures whirl in from non-
existence, galaxies scattered around their
feet. Have you met them? Do you hear the
bud of Jesus crooning in the cradle? A single
narcissus flower has been appointed Inspector
of Kingdoms. A feast is set. Listen: the
wind is pouring wine! Love used to hide
inside images: no more! The orchard hangs
out its lanterns. The dead come stumbling by
in shrouds. Nothing can stay bound or be
imprisoned. You say, “End this poem here,
and wait for what’s next.” I will. Poems
are rough notations for the music we are.

Tongue diagnosis is as essential aspect of the Chinese Medicine and Naturopathic physical exam but why?? It’s funny and a little quirky but it can tell us SO MUCH! Check out this great article from Acufinder.com that demystifies this diagnostic process a little bit
For many of us health conscious individuals, the search for a good alternative sweetener to sugar has led to many unfortunate dead ends. The most recent craze is undoubtedly centered on Agave. Alas, this is yet another instance of top of the line advertisement leading the public astray.
Here is the truth: Agave Syrup has up to 97% fructose–even higher than high fructose corn syrup–the evilest of all creations. Although fructose does not raise blood sugar levels, it does increase insulin resistance, which lends towards obesity and is the first stage in the development of Type II Diabetes. Unlike glucose, fructose is %100 metabolized in the liver, meaning it is immediately broken down and converted into harmful fats. Furthermore, it enters into glycolysis at a stage that is unregulated, thus inhibiting the normal control of our metabolism and appetite. If we look at the increase in obesity rates in the United States, there is a strong correlation between the advent of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Not good.
Oooh and even more exciting is the list of chemicals used to refine it. Look at these gems: Activated charcoal, resins, sulfuric and/or hydrofluoric acid, dicalite, clarimex, inulin enzymes and fructozyme. I was particularly impressed with the hydrofluoric acid, which on a recent episode of Breaking Bad, was used to dissolve a dead body, and in the process dissolved metal, tile and wood. Yum. There are those companies that do make sure to use raw, organic agave, free of pesticides, and less toxic refining process. However, even those companies committed to producing a good product; which is a minority, end up with a produce that is 50% fructose.
